Libertarian Chase Oliver embraces 2nd chance to be called spoiler by Old Party candidates dodging their own failures
DALLAS – Libertarian presidential candidate Chase Oliver expects the whining to start as soon as election returns start rolling in on Election Night, as it always does with close races.
“Four years ago, Donald Trump blamed Jo Jorgensen for being the spoiler in the election. And if we could disrupt the political process and get that prominence, we’re happy to do so, whether it’s spoiling for Harris or spoiling for Trump.”
“Someone is going to blame us in November for the reason why their preferred candidate lost.”
Oliver experienced it 2 years ago when he ran for the U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, and pundits credited his votes for triggering a runoff.
Libertarians and other grassroots candidates give Old Party candidates a built-in excuse: It’s the third-party candidate’s fault.
The false spoiler logic disregards that voters who support Libertarians would not vote otherwise. Many nonvoters describe their refusal to participate as a silent protest against sham elections.
If “Did Not Vote” had been counted as an electoral choice in 2016, “Did Not Vote” would have won 490 Electoral College votes, far more than the 270 needed to win. More than 96 million Americans did not vote from the 230 million eligible to vote, and of those who were registered, only 58.4 percent voted.
Chase Oliver stands up for his supporters and nonvoters alike.
He didn’t drop out.
And he didn’t spoil the election.
“You can’t spoil what’s already rotten.”
